We are one of the earliest departments in Shanghai and even in China to treat children's flat feet with modern concepts. In the past, the development of children's flat feet could not be prevented. Many children had delayed treatment. However, as parents of children with flat feet, there is no need to be particularly nervous, as long as the basic situation of the disease is clear, will not miss the treatment.
Flat foot is very common in infancy, until 4 to 5 years old when the arch of the foot is formed, this period unless the foot is very flat to make shoes easy to slip or needn't surgery, for these children we use arch pad support treatment, but the arch pad neither changes the shape of the foot nor makes the arch formation, it just makes the foot in the shoes position. It's easier to wear better shoes.
If the foot is flat by the age of eight, some children will have symptoms, complaining of foot pain, arch fatigue and being unable to keep up with other children in sports. This is going to the hospital. If parents do not pay the necessary attention at this time, the foot may change from a soft flat foot to a fixed flat foot, at this time the treatment becomes complex, and the effect is not as good as before. It is very important to understand this.
Treatment includes conservative treatment and surgical treatment. If shoes and arch pads do not improve symptoms, surgery may be necessary. There are two successful methods, one is to implant a columnar plug into the subtalar joint, and the other is osteotomy. The columnar bolt has been proved effective in correcting flat feet.
If flat foot is mild, or does not appear obvious clinical symptoms, can carry out functional exercise, without special treatment. For preschool children, they should not be restricted to play barefoot; school children should strengthen physical exercise, so that the whole body muscle developed. To adolescence, especially in children with significant weight gain, can do daily foot muscle exercises, such as walking with heels, toes, the outer edge of the foot, or practice rope skipping, rubber bands, tiptoe gymnastics or dancing. When walking normally, pay attention to the foot not to buckle. Correct the habit of taking eight steps. Teenagers should wear soft bottom shoes or sports shoes as far as possible so as not to restrict the normal development of the arch. Usually wear shoes properly, preferably with heel shoes, but girls should not wear high heels.
If you have a more obvious flat foot, or clinical symptoms, under the guidance of the doctor, with special insoles or wear special correction shoes, correction. Over the age of 15, you can also do daily exercises such as picking beans with your toes, tricking logs and kicking shuttlecock.
