Development and current situation of ankle and foot surgery in China

Foot and ankle surgery in China started relatively late, in the 1930s and 1940s, our medical predecessors began to try to treat foot and ankle surgery diseases. After a long period of time, foot and ankle surgery was performed by surgeons or department of orthopedics doctors. It was not until the late 1970s that foot and ankle surgery began to emerge in China and became an independent branch of surgery or orthopedics. More and more doctors and medical students begin to take the road of foot and ankle surgery, and more and more books on foot and ankle surgery have been translated and published. Especially in the past 20 years, the development of ankle and ankle surgery in China has made great progress. In 1992, the Department of orthopedics of the Chinese Medical Association established the foot and ankle surgery group. Professor Chen Baoxing served as the first group leader. In the same year, Professor Mao Binyao's "Foot Surgery" was published as the first monograph on foot and ankle surgery in China. In 2006, Professor Wang Yiyi's "Foot and ankle Surgery" was published by the People's Health Publishing House. There are other related monographs published during and after this period. However, compared with the development of Western foot and ankle surgery, it is still very backward, and there are many vacancies to be filled.
First of all, there is no perfect training system for foot and ankle surgeons in China. There is no special training institution for foot and ankle surgery in China, and the training system is not perfect. A few foot and ankle surgeons are mainly provided by graduate training system, which can not meet the needs of the huge number of patients with foot and ankle diseases in China. In addition, there are fewer hospitals for ankle and foot surgery in China, the vacancies of doctors are mostly filled by orthopaedics doctors, the knowledge and understanding of ankle and foot diseases are not perfect, the basic professional knowledge is deficient, the rate of missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis of ankle and foot diseases is high, the long-term prognosis of the disease is poor due to the wrong diagnosis and treatment plan or poor, and the vast number of ankle and foot disease patients. The long-term quality of life of the patients could not be improved. The government, the society and the medical profession have not paid enough attention to the foot and ankle surgery. They have not paid enough attention to the establishment of medical security system and fee standards, scientific research and market investment, discipline construction and personnel training. There is still a lack of corresponding treatment and prevention guidelines and evaluation standards to guide clinical diagnosis and treatment of medical disputes as a standard of evaluation, doctors are also lack of corresponding protection, so many doctors are unwilling to engage in this direction. There is no professional magazine in China that provides professional guidance and communication between doctors, which restricts the promotion of technology and professional communication.
China has a large population, the total number of patients with ankle and foot diseases is very large, but most of the therapists have not been trained, treatment measures are very imperfect and standardized, which directly leads to many diseases in the early stage can not be effectively treated, leaving patients with long-term or even life-long pain. Therefore, under the current situation of relative saturation of medical personnel in China, foot and ankle surgeons who have been trained professionally, possess higher comprehensive quality and working ability are still in a state of scarcity.
